Celebrity Wednesday with Ursella Andress talking about Osteoporosis

Osteoporosis is an increasingly common condition that affects three million people in Britain: one in two women and one in five men over the age of 50 develop the disease.
After the age of 35, we all naturally lose some bone strength as old bone is lost faster than new bone is made.
However, in someone with osteoporosis this process is speeded up, so the bones become critically brittle - women are particularly vulnerable after the menopause because they have lower levels of bone-protecting oestrogen.
A serious condition

Ursula partying in London in 2004
In many cases, fractures are life-threatening: one in five women who fracture their hip as a result of osteoporosis die within six months.
The problem is that many women with the condition are going undiagnosed. And even in those cases that are detected, many, like Ursula, don't take their medication - with serious results.
Ursula was unaware of how serious the disease could be when it was detected during a routine health check eight years ago.
A scan revealed the bones in her hips were showing early signs of weakening, but she disregarded the diagnosis. As she says, she wasn't an obvious candidate for osteoporosis, being physically fit and eating calcium-rich foods.
'I have always been sporty and done lots of exercise,' says Ursula, who has one son Dimitri, 28, from her relationship with actor Harry Hamlin.
'I have never smoked, I've always eaten well, including dairy, and drink wine only with a meal. And while my mother had a hip replacement, she didn't fracture a hip to my knowledge and she lived to be 96.
'True, I was post-menopausal, but otherwise had none of the risk factors. I didn't think someone like me - a former Bond girl who from 7am until late is go, go, go, who eats well and walks miles every day - would get this disease.
'Foolishly, I refused to take the diagnosis seriously. The doctor told me to take a daily pill to help stop my bones from getting any weaker and to take calcium to help keep the bones strong.
'But I am the world's worst pill-taker and always have been. About four years ago, I was in India and caught pneumonia. I pleaded with the doctor to give me the shortest dose of antibiotics possible because I knew otherwise I wouldn't finish the course.
'With the osteoporosis pills, I would think: "I will take it later" - and it would get later and later, and days passed without me taking the medication.
'Within a few months I gave up altogether and just took calcium when I remembered. I thought I would be fine, especially as I had no pain and was still swimming and walking miles every day, which I thought would keep my bones strong.
'Besides, by drinking a bit more milk and eating a bit more cheese I thought my bones would improve.
'I was totally wrong. By not taking my medication I have put myself at great risk.'
Wake-up call
Earlier this year, Ursula had her first full medical since her diagnosis and was horrified by what the doctors had told her. A scan found that her bones had deteriorated greatly.
'The doctor told me that unless I took my medicine, I would definitely fracture my hip within the next few years,' she says. 'Even a stumble would be enough for this to happen.
'It was a total wake-up call for me. I've always been so healthy, and the idea that just going about my day-to-day life could put me at risk was a real shock.
'Bones don't heal themselves with a sticking plaster; this was serious. That scared me a lot.

Don't Get Frozen Out--Choose a New Winter Coat

Winter and the cold weather is coming. You can wrap up warm but still look fantastic in this Winter's fabulous coats.
All shapes and styles here from the top designers to budget fashion buys - so snuggle up and browse your favorite sites.

Macy's has 20% off plus free shipping.
Lord and Taylor has up to 60% off of most of their coats

Which coat is right for your life and your style?

Consider where you want to wear your winter coat most often. You probably want something that will work with your daily activities. If you are still working and you need to dress up at an office, you might be better off with a classic tailored wool coat. If instead you spend your day chauffeuring your kids or going to exercise class, a sporty parka would much more likely fit the bill. Or how about a weekend coat. Do you go out to nice restaurants or the theater, a long detailed coat would be the best choice. If outdoor activities are your weekend, something warm and snuggly, like a down coat would be perfect.

Think about how your coat will fit into your wardrobe. Of course, you will be layering your coat over what you wear inside. So go with what you wear, so your styles won’t compete. A little preppy? Then unless you’re going for a particular look, a leather motorcycle jacket probabely would be a no, no, but a lined trench or a toggled wool ¾ jacket would work.

Which coat will be most flattering on your body type?
The right size or tailored to the right size is very important. Shape is another story.

"If you would like your coat to help you feel taller, try a women's coat that hits no lower than an inch above your knee to elongate your leg line.
If you need a little help creating curves, try a belted coat. Belts will cinch in the waist, creating a feminine hourglass shape.
If you're worried about looking top-heavy, consider a single-breasted coat.
If you're worried about looking bottom-heavy, try an A-line coat.
If you have broad shoulders or a large bust, look for a coat with a V-neck."

And that’s about it.

Sweater Coats--Are They for You?

Sweaters are one of my favorite winter staples. They solve my dilemma of bulking up with an uncomfortable coat because I am forever cold. I love sweaters so, one of my favorite items is the neutral colored sweater coat. Here is a simple way to add a sweater coat to your wardrobe. Add a Belt!!

Fun and Frivolous Friday

Especially if you have worked all week, Friday’s should always be fun if not frivolous. That is why I try to add a post that has nothing to do with being sixty or fashion do’s and don’ts.

So … sit down and pour yourself a cup of your favorite tea. Don’t look around thinking, I should b e cleaning, raking . . . etc. Feel the warmth. Let it seep from your hands through your body. Inhale the relaxing aroma, and consider everything this cup of your favorite brew can do.

1. Clean carpets: Clean up musty, dirty carpets by sprinkling dry, used green tea leaves on the carpet. Let them work their magic for about 10 minutes, then vacuum them up. Delicate Persian and Oriental rugs can also benefit from a sprinkling of tea leaves. In this case, sprinkle nearly dry, used whole tea leaves on the rugs, and gently sweep them away.

2. Shine wood floors: The tannins in black tea can help shine and color hardwood flooring. Follow your regular floor cleaning routine by carefully rubbing some brewed tea into the floor (don’t use too much water on hardwood flooring) and letting it air dry.

3. Polish furniture: Brewed tea also can help clean and shine wood furniture. The tannins in tea will re-color light spots and scratches in wood surfaces. Dip a soft cloth in a small amount of strongly-brewed tea, and use it to wipe down scratched tables, chairs, and more. Woodworker Jim McNamara suggested using "regular orange pekoe (Lipton's) or other dark tea" in Woodworker's Gazette.

4. Clean mirrors and windows: Tea can remove stubborn, greasy fingerprints from glass, and make it sparkle. Simply rub a damp teabag on the glass or fill a spray bottle with brewed tea.

5. Clean toilet stains: Rumor has it that used tea leaves can magically remove stubborn stains in the bottom of the toilet bowl. Just leave them in the toilet for several hours, then flush the toilet and brush the bowl.

6. Soothe a sunburn: Tea can soothe sunburns and other minor burns. Dr. Oz suggests sponging sunburned skin with "cooled chamomile tea" for it's anti-inflammatory effect. Don't try this if skin is broken.

7. Soothe tired eyes: Warm, wet tea bags can reduce puffiness and soothe pain around tired eyes — and tea bags on your eyes look a little less ridiculous than cucumber slices.

8. Soothe bleeding gums: After a tooth extraction or when an older child loses a tooth, try putting a cold, wet tea bag in the mouth where the tooth was lost and bite down on it. According to the Cleveland Clinic, "The tannic acid in tea helps healing blood clots to form (blood clots function similarly to a scab on an open wound). It can reduce bleeding and soothe pain."

9. Shine dry hair: Brewed tea makes a good conditioner for dry hair. Rinse with (unsweetened) tea and leave to dry for a while, then rinse again with water.

10. Improve skin: The Mayo Clinic suggests that herbal tea ingredients chamomile and calendula can help soothe dermatitis when prepared as a topical cream. Consult with a qualified health practitioner before using these remedies.

11. Soothe acne: Some acne sufferers swear by washing their faces with green tea because of its mildly antiseptic properties. Dr. Andrew Weil suggests washing with calendula flower tea as a natural alternative to benzoyl peroxide.

12. Tenderize meat: Marinate tough meat in black tea to make it more tender.

13. Add to compost: Pouring strong tea into a compost bin will help speed up the process and encourage more friendly bacteria to grow, improving the compost.

14. Help houseplants: Occasionally use brewed tea instead of water to feed ferns and other houseplants that like rich, acidic soil. Spread used tea leaves around rosebushes, then add mulch and water. The tannic acid and other nutrients will benefit the plants. A few used teabags in the bottom of a planter can help the soil retain water, and adds valuable nutrients.

15. Dye fabrics: Green and black teas have long been used in dyes for fabric and paper, particularly for generating a beige, faux-antique look.

And . . . if all else fails, call your favorite friend and have a cup of tea :)

Celebrity Wednesday--Lovely Judi Dench

Gray is tricky
Wear it well, and you could be unforgettable. But play it wrong, and you risk looking like a (great-) grandma. Despite the challenges, lots of women do go natural — and love it. Would you consider being one of them? Here's what you need to know to decide.

Well, here’s what happens. The cells that produce pigment slow down and make less melanin, causing your hair to lose its original color. Hence, the variations of gray, silver and white. How fast you go gray is mostly hereditary So. . .to color or not.
According to a New York City Salon quoted in Good Housekeeping, there are some gray nono’s

1.Your skin is yellow- or olive-toned. "Gray is a cool shade, so it doesn't always complement warm skin tones," says Robert Gallagher, owner of the Long Hair Care Group in New York City.
2.Your locks are thinning or superfine. Unless you cut your hair very short, a light color (whether blond or gray) can make it look even sparser than it is.
3.Your hair is very frizzy. Flyaways are more noticeable with gray (or blond) hair. So if you have trouble with frizz control, consider coloring to get a sleeker look.
If you have uneven gray patches, consider adding highlights to blend, turning patches into stylish streaks.

If you have: dyed hair and want to go au natural, try switching to a semipermanent color, and a lighter shade with each touchup. According to GH if you only cover the new growth, the ends will fade eventually to the color you want.

If you are gray already, try a little tlc. Gray hair can be frizzier, more wirey and even yellow. GH writes to condition and use a moisturizing shampoo. Counteract yellowing, if any, with a purple shampoo or conditioner (try L'Oréal Nature's Therapy Color Confidence Blonde Brightening Shampoo) and a monthly rinse with lemon water (the juice of one lemon for every two cups water) to help eliminate smoke- and pollution-induced discoloration.

So Enjoy Your Gray As Judi Dench does--how beautiful!!

Orange--Perfect for the Season

Sometimes outfits I throw together, seem to do best. Fighting the tail end of a cold, yesterday, I unenthusiastically pulled out this orange vest purchased at Walmart. It was orange day for the storytime which I do so. . . I tried it on, paired it with khaki pants and a neutral turtleneck and the new BARGAIN at Van Heusen outlet, the $24 necklace for $3 and voila, an outfit that received tons of compliments.

Cords for Any Age or Shape

I always associated corduroy with school and students or absent-minded professors. Not any more Corduroy has undergone a overhaul. The material and colors have been updated-you can get corduroys in any style, slouchy, skinny and flared. Colors are very exciting at this point in time--lots of jewel tones and neutrals. And one of the best perks is that they often contain a touch of spandex to make them hold their shape (remember baggy cords of old) yet be comfortable as well.

Pair them with a casual jacket, or an upscale glittery blouse and you will set the mood for any evening. Cords come in all weights as well, so they are no longer reserved for a cold, snow capped evening.

Fun Friday--Halloween, Here I Come

I've always thought Halloween should be fun, but with the majority of birthdays in October, I never had enough energy to think about a costume and forget about actually putting one together--my energy just never expands to that realm.

Sooo, when I came across some easy fixes, I thought I might share them with you.

Golden Cleopatra--craft a belt and headdress covering them in jewels, pair them with a straight long maxi dress or a sheet tied as a toga and you are the hit of the party.Cut an 18" circualr color with a hole in the center and one side snipped. Decorate with self adhesive jewels. Use velcro to keep everything together. Measure from ankle to waist and cut felt starting at 8" wide at bottome and narrowing to 4" width at the top. Fashion into a belt, and add self adhesive jewels. Measure head and add 5 " glue more of the jewels . Use bronze eyeshadow and you are cool.

Flirty Flapper-- Take a simple black shift and add some fringe $3 a yard a a fabric store, buy a feather boa $1 at Party feathers.com)

Hippie
The classic hippie look spans both the '60s and early '70s. This is a versatile costume idea you can adapt for a casual party or a fashion-themed event. Loose polyester jackets and button-down or tie-dyed shirts work for both men and women. For a girlier look, wear a flowing flower-print dress and a long open vest accessorized with a head band around the forehead. The key to carrying off a hippie costume is in your demeanor. Hippies have come to symbolize peace and love, so put a smile on your face and consider picking a few flowers to pass around.

Sophia Loren

“Beauty is how you feel inside, and it reflects in your eyes. It is not something physical.” Sophia Loren

The most obvious of Sophia Loren’s beauty secrets are that she exudes inner confidence and intelligence. She is elegant as well as beautiful, and no matter what outfit she happens to be wearing she always looks poised and in command of her movements and actions.

Sophia Loren Says:

“Finally, some good news: eat more pasta! At last I have support from scientists as well as gourmets when I urge pasta upon you. How many times have people, while covertly gazing at my hips or waistline, asked how I keep my figure with all that pasta. Now the tag-along scientists have confirmed what Italian mamas have known for generations – pasta is good for you. Indeed, Italians are lucky to live with a culinary heritage that relies on pasta because it is a complex carbohydrate and a very efficient and healthy fuel for the body.

Complex carbohydrates are also to be found in beans, rice and vegetables. Eating carbohydrate will keep you from getting hungry by preventing your blood-sugar level dropping. Scientists have found that it is easiest to lose weight on a diet rich in complex carbohydrates for that reason: the carbohydrates will satisfy your hunger and give you energy because they are being burned efficiently by your body.

The best pasta for good nutrition is whole wheat pasta – we call it black pasta in Italy. Of course you can’t expect to add rich cream sauces and still enjoy its good effects. Serve it with a sauce made from tomatoes and unrefined olive oil, with perhaps some shredded carrots added for natural sweetness.”

Ankle Boots--Will They Work?

I've been seeing alot of ankle boots out there and have a few myself. I've shied away from pairing them with skirts, but I think they would make a classic look with the right skirt. This style is perfect for those days that start out chilly and warm up during the day. You can look chic and not roast.

Ankle boots look wonderful with long skirts whether they have a heel or not. Add a pair of tights and you have a classic look.Try to pair the boots with the same color tights for a flattering silhouette. If you are brave or have gorgeous games, try a short skirt with the ankle books. Again, try for the same color tights.

Of course, one of my favorites are pants with a nkle boots. Anyone can pull this off. Get the warmth of a boot without the inconvenience of a taller boot. Tuck the pants in, therefore, they must be fairly skinny. A cuffed b oot under a wide pant will distort your shape unfavorably.

I wouldn’t wear ankle boots with any of these.
• Cropped Pants
• Cropped Tights
• Mid-Length Skirts with Bare Legs
• Pencil Skirts
• Shorts
• Capris
Now go out an splurge on a sexy pair.

Celebrity Wednesday--Diahann Carroll at 76

Diahann gives common sense advice we've all heard ""taking care of your skin is not a secret, but it's very important. What you eat is the most important thing that I can say about remaining attractive and healthy. I would only say be very careful with the diet and make sure that you exercise."

You can be as savvy as Diahann Carroll--match her look with these classic pieces.

Tempting Tuesday

I love to bargain shop, even if I don't buy anything. You can probably ask me where to find any fashion item and I can tell you where to get the best price. Sooo, on my way home from the fantabulous wedding in Chicago, Ms. Savvy, here couldn't resist a quick trip to the outlets in Grove City, Pa. One of my new found crushes happens to be the Van Heusen Outlets. The two times I have visited in the past few months, they have had between 40% and 50% off of their original prices, and then an additional two discounts, usually about 30% off and then another 15%. This brought the cami pictured above from $26 down to $8.84 and the matching sweater from $68 to $23. Amazing. And their selection never seems picked over. They pretty much have all sizes in all colors. The set is a comfortable and professional fit, perfect for work. The color selection was so abundant, I had a hard time making up my mind, but this red/orange color works especially for brunettes and brightens up any rainy day.

Pair the set with a denim skirt, as I have red shoes and this fantastic black wool and leather purse and you have a great outfit for business casual or a casual evening out.

Happy Monday

Hi everyone--have been on a mini vacation as my son just got married in
Chicago. To get back in the swing of things, long gowns are flattering at any age.
This steel gray gown was one of the most comfortable I have ever had. Everything is built in, so no worries about what bra you need. It is fully lined. The dress is by JS Boutique Sequin Trim Jersey Gown It was a bit long and the hem was uneven so, I did rehem it. Evidently, this is the trend, because a few others from the wedding said their dresses were way too long, and they chose to get four inch heels to compensate.
