Fun Friday Embrace Your Inner Geek

Read It: Geek Girls Unite
October 28, 2011 By Anne

Has anyone ever called you a “geek”? Truth is, I’ve always sort of thought it was a compliment, and Leslie Simon’s new book, Geek Girls Unite: How Fangirls and Other Misftis Are Taking Over the World, extrapolates that idea.

You see, Simon is a geek herself, and as one, she understands the nuances and different sub-categories of geekdom. There’s the Fangirl Geek, Literary Geek, Film Geek, Funny Girl Geek, Domestic Goddess Geek, and the one I identify with most — the Music Geek. It’s the first manifesto for we girls who are passionate and knowledgeable about a certain topic or genre.

Simon breaks down each kind of geek in chapters with quizzes, character sketches, lexicons, famous kindred spirits, and corresponding books, music and culture associations. She also gives tips on how to point out “frenemies” (AKA poseurs). For instance, Music Geeks are not “Consumers who continue to buy those god-awful Now That’s What I Call Music compilations.” Leslie, I couldn’t agree more.

So, embrace your inner geekdom — it’s what makes you cool. You’re passionate about your interests and that’s awesome. The whole “aloof” thing is so passé anyway.
